Stalin (real name - Dzhugashvili) Iosif Vissarionovich [9 (21) .12. 1879, Gori, now the Georgian SSR, - 03/05/1953, Moscow], one of the leading figures of the Communist Party, the Soviet state, the international communist and labor movement, a prominent theoretician and propagandist of Marxism-Leninism. Born into the family of a handicraft shoemaker.
In 1894 he graduated from the Gori Theological School and entered the Tbilisi Orthodox Seminary. Under the influence of Russian Marxists living in the Transcaucasus, he joined the revolutionary movement; in an illegal circle he studied the works of K. Marx, F. Engels, V. I. Lenin, G. V. Plekhanov.
